Biomimicry: Self-assembling solar cells inspired by salad dressing (vinegar + oil)
Salad dressing - the vinegar + oil emulsion - inspired this manufacturing method to create solar cells quickly and cheaply. The genius lies using "silicon stacks with a hydrophobic molecule on it, so it is repulsed by water; and gold stacks with a hydrophilic molecule on it, so it is attracted to water." The stacks float in an oil and water mixture which they drag a blank slate through it, which neatly draws the stacks into place on the blank.
